Key takeaways

  • Amazon India announced on 2 March 2026 that referral fees are zero on products under ₹1,000 across 1,800+ categories, from 16 March 2026. Amazon's fee page says the change applies to select categories.
  • Zero referral fee is not zero fees. A closing fee, a weight handling fee on some shipping routes, other fees and GST on the fees still apply.
  • Amazon's own pages word the price limit differently, so read your category's row on the fee page before you price.
  • Above the limit, the category percentage applies to the whole price, so a small price rise can cost far more than it earns.

Amazon zero referral fee means Amazon India charges no referral fee on many products priced under ₹1,000, from 16 March 2026, as announced on 2 March 2026. It applies to select categories, and closing fees, weight handling fees, other fees and GST on the fees still apply. Above the limit, a category percentage applies, so check Amazon's live fee page.

Amazon changed fees more than once in 2026: the referral change in March, revisions for named categories in June and a closing-fee update in September. Any fee table in an older guide may be out of date, which is why this page gives dates and no bare rates.

Which Amazon fees remain after zero referral fee?

Amazon's fee page lists several parts, and zero referral fee removes only the first. Amazon's own formula is: profit equals selling price minus the referral fee, closing fee, weight handling fee, other applicable fees and your product cost.

Amazon.in fee types as the fee page lists them, read in October 2026
FeeWhat Amazon's fee page saysWhy it matters at zero referral
Referral feeA percentage of the selling price that varies by category. The page header says it starts at 0%.Zero in the announced cases. Not zero everywhere.
Closing feeA fixed amount per item sold, based on the item price including any shipping charged to the buyer, and it differs by shipping route. It does not depend on the referral fee, and it steps up at price bands.
Weight handling feeA shipping fee for Easy Ship, FBA and Seller Flex, which Amazon delivers. Self Ship has no Amazon shipping fee, and you pay your own courier.A heavy product feels this most.
Other feesFor Fulfilment by Amazon: pick and pack, storage and removal. Program fees are extra.Slow stock costs money to keep.
GST on feesAmazon says fees are shown excluding GST and GST is added. It is a cost unless you can claim input tax credit. Ask your accountant.

Amazon calls its own calculators indicative and says actual fees may vary by category and fulfilment. Do not treat any single total, including ours, as your bill.

Which products get zero referral fee? Not every category does

The release says zero referral fees apply to products under ₹1,000 across 1,800+ categories. Read the fee page itself and the picture is more careful. Its disclaimer says the referral change applies to select categories, and refers to an Average Selling Price Band of INR 0-500. Many of its category rows show 0% for an item price up to ₹1,000, but some use lower cut-offs, and some categories carry a referral fee at every price.

So three things are unclear from outside: whether exactly ₹1,000 counts as under it, which band applies to your category, and whether a rate that is zero for one product is zero for yours. We print no category percentages for that reason. Open your category's row on Amazon's fee page and read it at your selling price, before you list or reprice.

What happens if you price just above ₹1,000?

Amazon's fee page shows the referral percentage applying to the whole selling price once you are above the zero band, not only to the part above it. Its own worked example takes a product priced above ₹1,000 and multiplies the full price by the category percentage. So a small price rise can bring in a fee on every rupee of the price.

Here is the effect with made-up round numbers. Say a product costs ₹600 all in and has GST at an illustrative 5% inside the price. Say its category has a referral fee of 10% above the zero band, and your closing and weight handling fees together come to ₹120 at the lower prices and ₹150 at the higher ones. Say 10% of orders come back at ₹100 return shipping and 5% of returned items are too damaged to resell. These are placeholders, not Amazon's rates.

Illustrative profit per order around the ₹1,000 mark, made-up numbers
Selling price (₹)Referral fee in this exampleClosing and weight handling together (₹)Profit per order (₹)
8990%120123.19
9990%120218.43
1,04910%150136.14
1,14910%150221.86

In this example, raising the price from ₹999 to ₹1,049 cuts profit per order by about ₹82, and the price has to reach about ₹1,149 to earn what ₹999 did. Your numbers will differ, but the shape is the point: check how your category's referral fee changes at the limit before you move a price across it.

How Amazon's fees changed during 2026

Amazon India fee changes in 2026, from Amazon's own pages as read in October 2026
DateChange
2 March 2026Amazon announced zero referral fees on products under ₹1,000 across 1,800+ categories.
16 March 2026The revised fees came into effect, according to the press release.
10 June 2026The fee page marks referral rate changes from this date for two named categories, Automotive tyres and rims, and fans and robotic vacuums.
7 September 2026Amazon is updating closing fees, which its fee page ties to an increase in logistics costs.

Media reports mention other charges, such as a fee when a seller cancels an order, but we did not find them on Amazon's fee page, so we do not state them. Read your Seller Central notices and the fee page for what applies to you.

Is selling on Amazon India profitable? A per-order model, with no income claims

It can be, and it can lose money. Profit per order is your selling price minus every fee, your product cost, GST, returns and ads, and the numbers belong to you. Amazon publishes no typical seller income, and we do not invent one. We also show no monthly total, because multiplying by an invented order count would look like a result.

What the fee structure does tell you is where profit leaks: a price just over the zero band, closing-fee price bands, weight in steps and volumetric weight from oversized packaging, GST on fees, and the cost of returns. How to reduce returns and RTO shows how to cut the last one.

Check your numbers in the free Amazon India profit calculator

Open the Amazon India profit calculator, enter your cost and selling price, set the referral percentage from your category's row, and add the closing and weight handling fees from the fee page, plus GST, returns and ad spend. It shows profit per order, margin and break-even price. It has no Amazon fee table built in, because Amazon changes its fees.

What Amazon itself suggests after the change

Amazon's seller blog on the 2026 fee change suggests that sellers reprice, add more products under ₹1,000, reinvest the savings in visibility and encourage multi-unit orders. That is Amazon's advice, and Amazon gains when you list more. Test each idea against your own profit per order before you act, because lower fees help only if the product still earns after returns and ads.

What this page cannot tell you

  • Your category's rate. Read your row on Amazon's fee page at your price.
  • What "under ₹1,000" means at exactly ₹1,000. The release says under; many table rows say up to.
  • Closing and weight handling amounts. They differ by route and price band, and they changed in 2026.
  • When you are paid. Amazon's pages tie payment timing to your seller performance level, so check yours.
  • What changes next. Amazon states that it can modify its selling fees.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

01

What is zero referral fee on Amazon India?

Amazon India announced on 2 March 2026 that referral fees are zero on products under ₹1,000 across 1,800+ categories, effective 16 March 2026. Amazon's fee page says it applies to select categories. It is not zero fees: a closing fee, weight handling fee on some routes, other fees and GST on fees can still apply.

02

Which products get zero referral fee?

Many categories, not all. Amazon's fee page shows 0% for an item price up to ₹1,000 in many category rows, some rows use lower cut-offs, and some categories carry a referral fee at every price. Open your category's row on the fee page and read it at your selling price.

03

Do I still pay fees on Amazon with zero referral fee?

Yes. Amazon's fee page lists a closing fee, a weight handling fee for Easy Ship, FBA and Seller Flex, other fees for Fulfilment by Amazon, and GST on the fees. You also pay your own courier if you ship yourself. Zero referral fee removes only the referral fee, and only where it applies.

04

What happens if I price just above ₹1,000?

Above the zero band, Amazon's fee page applies the category percentage to the whole selling price, so a referral fee can appear on every rupee of the price, and the closing fee can step up. Check your category's row before you move a price across the limit, and run both prices through a profit calculator.

05

Is selling on Amazon India profitable?

It can be, and it can lose money. Profit depends on your product cost, price, referral, closing and weight handling fees, GST, returns and ads, which no guide can see. Work out profit per order with your own numbers in the Amazon India profit calculator before you list or reprice.

06

How do I check fees for my category?

Open Amazon's fees and pricing page at sell.amazon.in/fees-and-pricing, find your category in the referral fee table and read the row at your selling price. Then check the closing fee for your shipping route and the weight handling fee. Amazon calls its calculators indicative, so compare with your settlement reports.

07

Has Amazon changed its fees again?

Amazon changed fees several times in 2026: the referral change took effect on 16 March, some category rates were revised from 10 June, and closing fees were updated from 7 September. It can change them again. We re-read the pages on 15 October 2026, so check the fee page for anything newer.
